This game got rained out on Wednesday night, so we’re just going to run things back for the early part of the double header.
The top of the first in this one sees one of the worst offenses in the majors trying to get to work. The Royals rank 28th in the majors in runs per game at 3.34. Things aren’t looking much better for them earlier in the game either. They rank 24th in first inning runs with just 0.38 per game. This is just some of the reason why I’m putting faith in Miles Mikolas to get an empty first frame. He also has been good in his own right. If we don’t include his most recent start – which was ittedly a bit rough – he has held opponents to just two earned runs in his previous three.
The bottom of the inning features an offense that is typically much better than the Royals, but have been really awful early in the game. The Cardinals currently are putting up just 0.33 first inning runs per game, which puts them in 28th place in the majors. Now they’ll face rookie Noah Cameron, who has been wildly stingy this season. In 25.2 innings (4 starts), he’s allowed just three earned runs. He has never allowed more than one earned run in a start before, and it doesn’t appear like now is the time for that to happen.

And if we like how bad these offenses are in the first game, the second game – where people will be resting – is even more likely to produce an NRFI. The poor early production of both teams has been laid out. So let’s take a look at what pitchers we’re trusting in the second game.
In the top of the first, it’ll be Matthew Liberatore who is looking to give us a clean first frame. He’s been pretty solid on the year – entering Thursday with a 3.08 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. His strike out numbers are nothing to write home about, but he had been keeping runs off the board. He’s held three of his last five opponents to one run or less and four of his last five to two runs or less.
The next pitcher we’re going in on is Cole Ragans. Sure, his numbers aren’t all that great. However, that’s because he seemed to be pitching with an injury for some time. He got hit hard twice before going on the IL. Now, having had a chance to get things right, I’m leaning on the idea that he should look something like his old self. If a team is going to give him a break early on, it’s likely the Cardinals.
