There are four main quarterback competitions happening in the offseason, and all can be bet on. We started the season with five. However, after Rodgers signed with the Steelers, that one is all but wrapped up. We’ll be breaking down each competition this month and who you should bet on to start. We’ll start our series in New Orleans. Let’s take a look at the Saints’ Week 1 starting quarterback odds and who you should bet.
Saints Week 1 Starting Quarterback Odds 1l56k
First, let’s talk about the players competing. About a month ago, Derek Carr decided to call it quits and retire. It’s hard to tell if this was a surprise to the Saints or not. Everybody knew he was dealing with a shoulder injury. However, I don’t think it was expected to force him into retirement. That left three quarterbacks on the roster.
Two of them were there last year. One of them is Jake Haener (+3000). He ended up making a start last year. However, he’s currently injured, which likely will hurt his chances of earning the starting job. So really, we’re just breaking it down between two players.
Spencer Rattler is another returning starter from last year who will battle for the quarterback competition. The last one is rookie quarterback Tyler Shough out of Louisville. Let’s take a look at these two a little closer and see which Saints’ quarterback has the best chance at starting Week 1 and what the odds are.
Spencer Rattler (+200) o3v9
We’ll start the Saints’ Week 1 starting quarterback odds with Spencer Rattler, who is +200 to start on Week 1. Rattler opened OTAs getting the reps with the number one team. It was just early June, however, it signified who they view as their starter, even for a short time.
Even though this is a new coaching staff, Rattler has chemistry with the returning players from last year, which should give him a slight leg up. Last year, he threw for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. He finished with a 70.4 er rating for the year.
Unfortunately, even though he was starting games, he didn’t win any of them. Of the six games Rattler started, he finished 0-6. Rattler is the youngest quarterback on the team, at only 24 years old. After starting for Oklahoma in 2020 and playing some of 2021, Rattler transferred to South Carolina.
He started two years for the Gamecocks and threw for over 6,000 yards and 37 touchdowns in those two years. However, he also threw 20 interceptions. Ratler also ran for 104 yards and four touchdowns in his last year of college. However, he’s not known for his running abilities.
Tyler Shough (-300) 2h2s59
The leader for the Saints’ Week 1 starting quarterback odds is rookie Tyler Shough. Drafted in the second round, there was some buzz when the Saints ed on a quarterback in the first round. However, they stuck to the draft board and still took Shough in the second, presumably excited about his potential.
He’s two years older than the previously mentioned Rattler and worked with the second team offense in OTAs. There have been reports from beat reporters that he made some really nice throws in OTAs. That includes a deep down the sideline to Rashid Shaheed that had the media buzzing.
Last year at Louisville, Shough threw for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He finished the year with a 62.7% completion percentage. Shough moved around in college. He started his career at Oregon, notching 1,559 ing yards and 13 touchdowns in 2020.
Shough then transferred to Texas Tech, where he played some games, but never stayed healthy enough to keep the starter job. Finally, in 2024, he was able to stay healthy and put up a full season of play. Shough is currently the favorite to win the starting job, despite being a rookie. However, head coach Kellen Moore and the organization hand-picked this guy, unlike the other quarterbacks on the roster.
WhO Will Be The Saints’ Week 1 Starting Quarterback 4d454j
After looking at the two guys battling for the job, who will be the Saints’ Week 1 starting quarterback? Laying -300 on a rookie quarterback is a little risky, especially when there is so much up in air with the program. The Saints likely don’t have a chance at winning the division or making the playoffs this year. Therefore, is there any point in rushing Shough into a starting role?
I don’t think there is. Coupling that with the fact that Spencer Rattler has actual NFL reps, I think he will open the season as the starter. You can currently get Rattler at +200 and I think the number will shrink as we get closer to the season.
